The Boeing 787 main wheel brake assembly uses four electric brake actuators per wheel, replacing the hydraulic pistons traditionally used to apply braking force. The actuators convert electrical commands into mechanical force that clamps the carbon brake discs to generate braking torque, and the system also provides real-time carbon-disc wear information to the cockpit.

The Boeing 787 uses electrically actuated carbon brakes on its main landing gear. Instead of hydraulic pistons, electric brake actuators use motors and gear mechanisms to press the carbon brake discs together. The discs rotate with the wheels, and the braking force converts the aircraft's kinetic energy into heat, slowing the aircraft. The brake assembly includes the carbon discs, torque tube, actuator carrier, electric actuators and electrical connections. The system also monitors carbon-disc wear, allowing brake-condition information to be provided to the cockpit.

University of Houston Builds Full-Scale Highway Sign Structure from Retired GE37 Wind Blade Segments

Dr. Nagesh Ramaswamy and a University of Houston research team designed, validated, and constructed a full-scale overhead highway sign structure using retired GE37 wind turbine blade sections supplied by Carbon Rivers as primary columns and horizontal members.

Manufacturing & Process Note: Repurposing retired blade spar caps with tensile strengths near 90 ksi shifts the cost burden from raw material procurement to inspection and connection engineering; plant managers should budget for non-destructive testing of legacy laminates and for specialized load-transfer hardware before committing to structural reuse programs.
